Just curious... building a pc and noticed that a lot of boards have two lan ports and wondered what purpose this would serve

This is a feature that is mostly used in corporate environment to implement proxy functionality. One port is connected to the outside world and the other is connected to the internal network, the computer can also be plugged into two independent sub-network

One of the port is used to connect to the internet,and the other can be connected to another computer for sharing information or playing

I believe one is an Ethernet (Network) port, and one is a standard RJ11 Phone jack for dialing into the internet (services like AOL)
