The human eye actually sees everything upside down and colorless... It is only with the assistance of the brain that they do (see) everything else via nerves and light impulses.
Eye Strabismus or Being "Crossed." is a physical appearence condition that does not always alter the vision (sometimes it does) because the eye adjusts to it and makes sense of it in the brain. They are resourcefull little buggers.
Think of it like taking one way to get to school and then taking a completely different way of getting to school... You can take it in any direction around the way that you like as long as the destination is the same, it's all good in the hood.
Sometimes though, if it is severe enough to have caused damage to the nerves that it uses to speak to the brain and relate light and images, then yes. corrective glasses are needed to bend and re direct the way the image is directed into the brain. In accordence with how the damaged eye see's it. such as getting the eyes to work together to gain depth perception.
When you cross your own eye or eyes, you see messed up because your brain is not used to that kind of stress or pattern so it get's scrambled up between the act of looking and the brain receiving the input. It's the same reason that if you stare at something long enough your eyes adjust and blurr all on their own even if you do nothing but look straight ahead.
Vision... One more thing in life that is completely relative and not at all what most people assume it is.
When will I get to stop telling you people this?

It depends on how bad their eyes are crossed, I know someone who, as a child, his left eye was turned all the way in towards his nose, it straightened up as he grew older, and he never had trouble seeing normal. I would imagine if both were crossed then a person would be seeing double.

only with corrective lens with prism in them making our eye look in the right direction with out them we look out of only one eye or we would not be able to walk a straight line. Believe me I have the bruises to show for it.
