Well we are glad they are off the drugs but I do understand what you are saying. Having a daughter who is a recovering addict, it is hard to keep up pats on the back for doing what? the right thing that the rest of us were doing all along? The addict is special because they decided to finally get it together and do the right thing? I know what you're saying. Sorry I don't have a better answer.

Battling an addiction is a daily struggle. It never goes away - not 10 days, 10 weeks, 10 months or 10 years after an addict gets "clean". Giving up an addiction is a difficult process that must be renewed daily. It is all too easy to slip back into the comfort of not having to fight it anymore.
I think society praises those who have reversed an addiction as a "boost" to the recovery process, which is only completed at the end of the life of the addict. It is a manner of support. The rest of society is also special, in that it never had to battle that addiction in the first place, and thus their traverse of life will be easier.
I honestly don't think that always happens. But I would think that any addict you talk to would tell you that not having societal support just makes the road that much harder, and that makes it that much easier to fall back to the addiction.

Just because someone does something wrong, makes a mistake does not mean that mistake defines them for the rest of their life. Having an addiction is a very intense thing. I have never been addicted to any drug, but I have relationships with people who have been addicted.
To go through it, and then come out of it, and withhold from going back is a powerful thing and should be encouraged. It is usually them trying to avoid something hurtful or unpleasant that they are experiencing in life, so they 'self medicate' instead of seeking help. And many times, there may be conflict or problem with them actuallly being able to receive the help.
If your child were an over eater and extremely obese.......eating like there was no tomorrow because he/she was hurting inside and the food made them 'feel' good, wouldn't you applaude and encourage them if they went on that diet, and started getting active again and pushing away from the dinner table and losing weight?
There is no difference. Food, drugs, alcohol......it is all self medicating, and it is a cry for help.

Hi Lioness, I tried to find "objectified" and "objectification" in the dictionary and no joy. Well, I'm not exactly sure I understand your queston, but think I might have an idea. Anyway, have you ever heard of the "bell curve"? It's a curve that is shaped like a bell and does a good job of representing statistics. As for beauty, at one end of the curve we have the least attractive and at the other end the most. The same would be true for income ... poorest on one side and richest on the other. In the middle of the bell we have all the average folks. I think what you're saying is true, but just simply a fact of life. We have the full spectrum for both genders. As for why guys don't protest ... I guess they realize that it's just the way things are and protests are unlikely to change anything. Hope this helps!

Because being an addict, is an illness and should be treated as such. Overcoming a horrible illness such as cancer, would be something that is praised and saluted, addiction is also a horrible illness, the only problem is society treats it differently, I guess it's like thinking the person that is addicted is a low life or something, not so at all. It shouldn't be treated any differently than any other devastating illness.

Just because they had a great fight inside themselves with their minds, bodies, desires etc in order to quit.
Have you got any idea how difficult is to quit from coke or heroin?
Very difficult..
Only if you had tried to do that you would understand how difficult is this and how much (the addicted person) fighted for that.
And also take in mind that many people fall into alcohol or drugs because of very serious personal and society problems and not by choice.
Nice question and excuse my english. :)

A whole lot of people have addictions of many things. One less addicted person is better for everyone. Doing drugs is the easy way out. I think that the reason they get support, is for each other. That's their new crutch instead of drugs. Thank God for support groups. More sober people to lean on each other!!!!

I have lived with addiction my entire life, but I am not an addict. I have seen firsthand what it does to people. It has destroyed families and lives of people that I love. I've seen what can happen when someone surrenders to addiction and I've seen what happens when someone asks for help.
Believe me, when someone recovers from addiction is a better sight than someone who doesn't.

Everyone loves a good story about redemption.
Everyone screws up in their lifetimes. Sometimes, it is just a small mistake, other times it can can be a life-changer. Some, when they screw up, figure that there is nothing that can be done. They wallow in their misfortune, moaning about how messed up things are.
It helps to hear that you can recover, that some can bring themselves back from a very bad situation. It gives the rest of us inspiration to improve our own situations
