You are referring to the invasion of Normandy France by Allied forces on June 6, 1944. Allied forces consisted of the United States, Great Britain, Poland, Canada Australia and others. It was secretly referred to by Commanders by the name of Operation Overlord. Allied forces left southern England across the treacherous waters of the English Channel into Normandy in order to break the Nazi stronghold along the coastline and thus push their way to Paris. This operation consisted of five landing points spread along the coast - 1. Omaha Beach 2. Utah Beach 3. Gold 4. Sword and 5. Coral The invasion forces consisted of ground troops (transported by troop landers, airplane and glider planes (in order to drop parachutists silently and undetected). Very facinating history!
