I think so; but if you're worried, you can always consult with a professional who can put your mind at ease and run some tests. Blessings!

It probably has a very negligable effect. Downs is not like cystic fibrosis. Many other factors are involved. I don't know where you are mailing from but if you are in the UK you ought to get very good care regarding this. You have an increased chance of having a Downs baby the older you are. If you are in your early 20s the chances are very low indeed. You should arrange to have a Neuchal fold translucency scan (and will be advised to if you are over 35), which is very effective in identifying high risk cases of Downs babies, combined with the triple blood test. If there is an increased risk you may be offered an amniocentesis, which will definitively tell you one way or the other. The fact that baby's father's aunt has Downs is of minor importance. Your doctor or pediatrician will advise you. And you must follow your heart. I wish you luck - and advise you not to worry about every little thing - because I know how easy that is!

Downs Syndrome or Trisomy 21 is a defect in the chromosomes. Every human has 23 pairs of chromosomes. In the case of Trisomy 21, the 21st pair of chromosomes is actually a triplet instead of a pair.
The only factor they have been able to link with downs syndrome is the age of the mother. The older the mother is chances of having a child with downs syndrome increases. His aunt really has no factor at this point as they are unable to prove it is genetic.

Here is what some experts say BUT: if I recall correctly down syndrome is usually a fluke rather than an inherited trait...it is found in older couples because older genetic material is more likely to have flaws ..older couples are also more likely to have twins. That is why we are seeing more natural multiples since women are opting to give birth later and later. When I had my son at 28 we were the oldest couple in Lamaze...now I think we would likely be in the younger catagory..if you have questions a test can be done and you'll know for sure. You and your baby will be fine.

That worried me a lot when I was pregnant with my first. I asked my doctor and he said that down syndrome is generic through the female. I was reliefed because my husband has both an uncle and a cousin with down syndrome. My child is perfectly fine. Luckily the doctor said that was nothing to worry about since it doesnt run in my family genes so my baby wasnt tested for it.

Would you honestly love your child any less if they had down syndrome? Don't worry about it, you'll have a beautiful baby either way. Try to be happy and think about the positive. Get a test run if not knowing is going to kill you.

I'm afraid the answer is yes.
I would recommend amniocentesis. If you don't want to have this done, your doctor may recommend a combination of fetal ultrasound and blood test during the first trimester plus a triple or quad screen during the second trimester.
I'm attaching a web site you can learn everything about down syndrome:

Hope this helps. God bless you !
