You'll need:
EDIT: *a CPU
*a case
*a power supply
*a hard drive
*a motherboard
*an optical drive would be smart (CD-ROM)
*an operating system (Windows, Linux, Mac OS, etc.)
*keyboard & mouse
*monitor
*display card
*RAM
*probably more that I don't remember

and any other peripherals you might want.
you'll end up spending as much as (if not more) as buying a computer.

Try newegg.com and look in the ads for stores like Best Buy.

U have to find what are ur requirements. i.e the purpose.
Buy a standard equipments so that the drivers are easily available either in the Cd or from the net.

Go for the latest, it may be costly, but will have a longer worthiness as it can be used say for 3-4 years.

buiding one is cheaper, buy a pentium 4 board with CPU, buy 512MB or more of memory, hard disk, at least 40gb, good monitor, floppy drive, cd/dvd ROM with writer, tower or minitower casing, key board and mouse and any other add ons u may need...its cheaper, good luck
