Hamlet... I was probably 16 back then... first saw
the movie version of "much ado about nothing", which was
when I decided to read some Shakespeare play.

Which turned out to be Hamlet. It is so rich in word plays
and wisdom, I never encountered anything alike.

King Henry V ... my favorite. See if you can find the movie by Kenneth Brannaugh. It's excellent! I did not like his Hamlet as well. His Othello was good, but given the rating, you may be too young for that one.

I first read Shakespeare in 9th grade (the Romeo and Juliet thing), but didn't get it. Later, as an adult, I began watching the plays and movies. Shakespeare was not meant to be read ... but performed. Seeing it performed helps to understand it. It's wonderful. Shakespeare wrote plays that show the depths of humanity, covering all issues of politics, society, economics.... all that is involved in humanity. And he holds no punches.

The language can be diffficult, so don't get bogged down in it. Relax and watch the play. Get the jist of it if nothing else at first. Also, study notes can help, as can a good book with Shakespeare's complete works, which will have footnotes and helps to explain things.

The mistake made in most schools is to force kids ro READ something that should be performed. When I homeschooled my daughters, we would have snacks and sit around the dining room table reading the plays aloud... each of us taking different characters. We would try to read in different voices, laugh a lot, talk over the meanings, and have a good time with it. They both love Shakespeare now and are not afraid to read ANYTHING!

Good Luck!

Sue

My favorite is "As You Like It", because of the line "All the world's a stage" among others. Then the balcony scene from "Romeo and Juliet" and of course "A Midsummer Night". I first read Shakespeare as a requirement in the ninth grade, but didn't really start reading Shakespeare for enjoyment until later in life, his sonnets are good reading also, especially after you get the rhythm down.

My first Shakespeare play was "The Merchant of Venice", and it is still my favourite. At 10, I happened to find the book on the shelf, and was attracted by the story plot. However, I didn't really appreciate Shakespeare's language and style until I was 18, when I was studying it in school.

Twelfth Night, I started studying Shakespeare in the 9th grade. It will sometimes take me a couple of readthroughs to understand exactly what is being said, but I love the language.
