Rekha or Ash as umrao jaan?

Rekhaji is magical, in those times she mesmerised with her charm and beauty, it was a different atmosphere the way movies were received then with fascinatin.Rekhaji played a dignified umrao.Morever khayyam saab's songs were exemplary complimented by rekhaji persona and emotions, so beautiful.
As for ash she is a beautiful umrao, she is too beautiful and stylish to play this sort of a character she doesnt have it in her. that sort of pain. She is totally clueless and lost. She ends up playing an plastic umrao.there is no comparison what rekhaji gave us is a masterpiece she should be appreciated and honoured. This movie is ash's tribute to herrole model i feel. GOOD.
Rekhaji's only drawback is she keeps posing a lot in her movies without letting go of her true emotions that might be bcas of her image and adulation she receives everyone swoons over her every move ADA. me too

Good question,....
Firstly, I would like to say that comparisons are inevitable. People will always compare both of these films, because that is just natural to do so.
But, I believe that we should see the new version of Umrao Jaan, which is played by Aishwarya Rai, as an individual and different product than the older version, acted by Rekha.
One thing which should be considered is, that these are two actresses are from two different generations, playing the role of the same women. Hence, differences will automatically occur in the movies, but without differences and changes, wouldn't the movie appear boring and ordinary?

If Aishwarya Rai would do everything allike to what Rekha had done in the original movie, then what is the point of re-making the movie?

Thus, I think we should learn to appreciate Aishwarya Rai's effort in acting in the skin of Umrao Jaan as a parallel line to the acting perfomed by Rekha, and not to join these two lines together and to view them as actresses who have given effort to play this character.

When I see Rekha I can see why they choose aishwarya for the role. They both are very very beautiful and have a charm and grace. Both however, are also aloof, they are never intimate with another person. You don't feel like they are particularly comfortable expressing their emotions. They are just alike. I'm looking forward to Umrao Jaan. It looks like a beautiful film.

i think rekha would be more better then ash as she has worked in old umroajaan she know the more better acting then ash and can dance good as akhotawali dance so rekha is more good then ash
