I think the biggest misconception people have when they hear about gay marriage is they think we're trying to change theology and force the church to marry gays. This couldn't be further from the truth. All GLBT people want from gay marriage is the same legal rights afforded to straight people under a civil marriage (not the same as holy matrimony). And before you ask, civil unions do not afford the same rights as civil marriage - not even a tenth of them. This is not a war on religion, this is not about a "gay agenda," and this is not about redefining the religious aspect of marriage. It's about giving GLBT couples the marriage certificates, it's about tax benefits, it's about medical spousal rights, it's about inheritance rights, it's about insurance rights, it's about family leave rights etc.

And for a lighter side of the argument,

10 Reasons Why Gay Marriage is Wrong:

1) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

2) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

3) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

4) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

5) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Brittany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

6) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children.

7) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

8) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

9) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.

10) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

Gay marriage should be allowed. I think to love and be with someone no matter what there gender is a gift. I have an uncle who is gay.I believe that he has the right to get married. Is he less than human because he's gay? No. I am married to a catholic family. When they bring it up I'm very vocal. They should have every right that I do being a married women. They may stay together because marriage is a privilege for them. They allow gay couples to have insurance and other types of medical why can't they have a ring

I feel it wouldnt effect America in anyway. People against Gay marriage claim to want to protect the constitution and our morality, not to mention the sanctity of MARRIAGE! But Divorce rates have been on a major incline and still increasing from heterosexuals. Also this constitution has and will always be ammended. The same contitution didnt allow blacks or women to vote. Back then Opposers to civil rights wanted to protect the constitution aswell. Some ignorant people are still trying to prove Homosexuality is a disease, Mental Disorder, or even a choice. Every experiment has failed and mos homosexuals will attest to not choosing their homosexuality. And these ignorant opposers also believe that if they let homosexuals get married then people will start marrying Animals, and then Children. They have the nerve to put Homosexualiy up their with pedofilia and beastiality! I have no idea why people are so threatened to Live and Let Live. I thought one good thing about this country is that we were entitled of Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I guess not!

You are lucky you got this actually because there is so much information and debate on it today.
Personally, I see homosexuals as any other person in this world and they should be treated with the same respect. They also shouldn't have limited rights just because of their sexual orientation. I mean, if we take away their right to marry...it's like saying it's okay to hire people for jobs based on race, gender, and so on. Or, maybe it's okay to turn down people because of those factors. It isn't. So why should it be okay for marriage.
Also, I don't see it as being others people's business whether they want to marry or not. I also don't see it as hurting anyone. Is anyone dying and starving in the world because people of the same sex are getting married? No. Are people driving drunk on our freeways and killing other drivers because a guy wants to marry his partner? No, I don't think so. We should really just let each other live in peace.
Even when religious activist groups say it demoralizes the sanctity of marriage, they should keep their noses out of other ppl's business. Seriously, half of all marriages end up in divorce, I don't see them rallying against divorce. Why? Because it's mostly a losing or an uphill battle. Sadly, divorce happens. They should just let it be. An seriously, where did separation of church and state go? I mean...wtf. Besides, I think we have bigger issues to be preoccupied with besides same-sex marriage. Issues like the state of the economy, the working middle class who is being ignored, health care, and rising education costs. This stuff is of more importance to the well-being of the nation.

Btw, I am a Christian - Catholic who is actually in opposition to some of the things my church says like this, abstinence only education, and other things that I'm sure we've all heard of at some point in our lives.

Well, even though I come from a semi-Christian background, I am bisexual myself and am totally in support of gay marriage.

There should be no difference between hetereosexual and/or homosexual marriages at all. I believe that people do not choose their sexual orientation and so why should they be penalised for something that is beyond their control? A marriage in terms of Western society at least, happens because of love. To deny the rights of the homosexual community is to render that love 'invalid' when this is clearly not the case. Just because you may be gay or lesbian does not mean that you are not or will not be loyal to your partner.

Another important point is that of equal rights. To not allow homosexual marriage is basically a form of prejudice and is no different to sexism, racism or any other form of discrimination. Why should a person's sexuality determine what they can and cannot do with their life?

So yes, it should be allowed. I hope this helps.

I have gone through a Civil Partnership in the UK which is the equivalent of a gay marriage, and so far I find it OK. My husband and I get on well and work together as a team as well as lovers. Marriage both gay and straight is not just what you get out of it but what you put in it as well. If you just take from a marriage then the relationship falls apart, but if you both give and take then you have a firm foundation.

Thankfully my country has already got this right so I can only speak to it in those terms. The argument against gay marriage is strictly religious. In Canada, our laws declared that gay marriage was defined as civil marriage not religious. Example: I could marry my bf with a justice of the peace or city hall or even my church since they allow it, but I can't force the Catholic church or another religious church to marry me. That protects the right of freedom of religion while also allowing me the right of freedom from religion. This is the best way to have it, equal and correct. Separate but equal does not work, that is why civil unions are so grating on the nerves of those of us who see it as a simple matter of social, moral, ethical and common justice.

I say if they are adults, work, vote, and pay taxes then they are entitled to the same rights as anyone else. A lot of people say it will impact on traditional marriage and I say HOW will it hurt it? Nobody has given me an answer yet that makes sense and cant because there isnt one. Nothing that can mess things up any more than the 50% divorce rate we have now anyway. Live and let live I say...two adults should be able to commit themselves and have the same rights as any other citizen. By the way I am a happily married woman not that it matters.

The practice of homosexuality is destructive to the human soul and God gave His warnings about this in the Bible. Supporting gay marriage is a sin because it means to support homosexuality.

Iniquities (sinful tendencies) pass down the generation line if they are not removed by the Blood of the Lord Jesus. Homosexuality is caused by iniquity and the Blood of Jesus cleanses the iniquities of all who accept Him as their Saviour.

After a person accepts the Lord Jesus as their Saviour, they are transformed and made a new creature in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). So the gay person would be changed and so would the alcoholic, liar, drug addict, fornicator etc. It's the power of the Blood of Christ and the Holy Spirit in the believer that brings about this transformation.

REDEMPTION BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH

Because mankind is incapable of meeting God’s standard of perfection necessary to abide in God’s presence (Romans 3:19-20,23), God sent His Son Jesus Christ to pay the total debt for the believer’s sins and mercifully credits to his account Christ’s righteousness (Romans 3:21-28,5:1-11; 2 Corinthians 5:18-21). Jesus’ gracious act of atonement was complete and covers all sin (Colossians 2:13-14; 1 John 1:9). Salvation is not based on good deeds but according to the mercy of God (Titus 3:4-5). Believers are justified by faith; it is a gift by God’s grace (Romans 4:3-8; Ephesians 2:8-9). A true, living faith will result in a desire to live a holy, loving life of good works (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:6; James 2:14-26), but failure to be absolutely successful at righteous living does not negate the believer’s justified status.

If you sincerely say this prayer, your sins will be washed away, you will be redeemed to God, be saved from eternal torment and inherit the Kingdom of God:

"Dear Jesus,

I am a sinner.
I repent of my sins.
Please forgive me and save me by your shed blood;
come into my heart.
I want to receive you as my own personal Lord and Savior.

Amen"

Personally I, a gay male, don't approve gay marriage persay. I agree that marriage is defined as a union between man and woman, but we should be allowed some form of union ceremony that is recognized along the same lines as a marriage
