Bernina, they are made by Brother, or Singer, they are also very good machines, I f you intend on buying a new one, try it out in the shop first.........there a machines, that cost more than a car these days, you don't need those, as you end up never using half of the stitches, unless you are going to do some very fancey sewing, you will need a machine, that has a good straight stitch a good overlocking stitch ,buttonhole, make sure is easy to use and works well. Too copy a item out of a mag to sew some people can do it, it is really hard, not as easy as it would look, myself i need a pattern to sew with, and they are easy to use,you really need to sit down and read all the bits and pices first. its great that you want to make your own clothes, i have been sewing since i was 15, and am now 53, and i love it. I have two large industrial machine, one is what they call and flat sewer, and the other is a overlocker, these are big machine. You can buy small overlockers, these machines are very useful. they tidy up in inside seams, and cut away access material, as thet sew. cheers, good luck with your sewing an god bless, if you want to know anything more, you can e-mail me.........excuse the spelling for some unknown reason, my spell check has gone on yahoo answers, and i don't no where...........

You might want to take a series of several sewing classes or get instruction from a friend or family member that sews. It is challenging and fairly expensive to get started if you are not sure about doing it.
Since you are a beginner go to Kmart or Sears and buy a basic starter machine. Probably $150.00 to $200.00, watch for sales.
The elaborate type can cost as much as a used car. $5000.00.
Take all of your measurements. Bust, waist, hips, neck size, shoulder width, and sleeve length
Take your measurements and your picture to a fabric store. You probably should just ask a lady in the fabric section to help you first thing.
Sit down with a pattern book, either Simplicity or Butterick. These are the most simple of the patterns. Allow at least an hour. Look through the books in the appropriate section for a pattern similar to what you want to copy.
Try to find a pattern that is similar to the picture you have. Then match your measurements to the measurements on the chart for that garment for correct size.. Then pull the pattern from the cabinet for that company and the number on the top of the pattern.
After finding a pattern read the recommendation for fabric. Then select fabric.
Don't forget thread, zipper, elastic or what other items you need to complete your garment.
Ask for help the ladies in the fabric department will be able to give you help.
Try to do something simple first. Good Luck.

I have Singer sewing machine, but there are many different types that are also good. I would go look at the pattern books and find a pattern that looks a lot like the pictures in the magazine. I used to do this all the time. I haven't sewed for a long time, but I used to make a lot of my girls' clothing. Sometimes the places where you can buy fabric give sewing lessons also.
Good luck and have fun sewing!

I would suggest getting a sewing machine at Walmart. You shouldn't go and get a very expensive one because what if you find out you don't really like to sew.LOL I have been sewing for years and I use the one I bought at Walmart. As for the coping something you saw in a magazine. Go and look at the patterns at the fabric stores to see if you can find one simular to the style you seen in the magazine. I suggest you read books on sewing. I wish I had would have done that years ago. It would have helped me to make my clothes compliment my figure better. I learned that patterns are made for a woman with a bra size ( B). I am a DDDD and I would be upset because the outfits I made didn't fit quite right. I also have a waist that is about 10 inches smaller than my hipps. Clothes would fit to lose on my waist and tight on my hips. I have read books on how to alter patterns to compliment my figure better. I also recommend that you buy enexpensive matterial to start with. That way if you mess up your not out of a lot of money. Also talk with the ladies at the Fabric stores and they will help you. There is a lot to learn. But it is a lot of fun too. Good luck

Brothers and Singers are both good brands. Ideally, get a no-frills sewing machine, perhaps an older model with all metal parts... they're heavy duty.

Singer and brother machines are very good, and pretty reasonable. You can get them cheaper at a walmart if there is one around you. or online. as far as the copy of the style, you may have to buy a pattern similar to the style and atler it, but if you are a beginner it may be difficult. If you know someone who is good at making patterns then they can do it for you. Well I hope this helps. good luck!!!!!!!!

I'd go for a Bakom e-generis Galilee910 in charcoal grey. Part number 037G13255320 6221-G44 Mar-03, manufactured in France, and comes complete with non-tangle cord and easy to read large display keys..
..Oh, sorry. SEWING MACHINE! I thought you said telephone for your desk.
(Christ, how bored am I?)
