I think when people think of this they think of the tough old army of old, where the drill sergeant was truly akin to the one from Full Metal Jacket. However that isnt the case.
And this has been done before, and what happened was that although there were many cases where the miliary helped turns these offenders around and give them new meaning in life and respect, there were also many others where it didn't work and you ended up with a volatile anti-authority element in the army, which is a very bad thing since a functioning army relies on everyone following orders and not telling their superiors to shove off.
So a good idea in theory certainly, but in practice I think you'll find it a lot more disappointing

Should be an option. I'm 19 and looking at 12-18 months in Young Offenders - back in court for sentencing at the end of the month. I have always been interested in the army but never did much about it. Have been told that I will be able to apply again when I get out and I plan to do that. I would much prefer to have the choice of the army over being locked up for a year or whatever.

I agree that National Service be brought back, but not for the prison service, as it is, our army is quite low on recruitment numbers at the moment, so, the best thing we can do is not allow prisoners into the armed forces, they are in prison for a reason, let them stay there. If we went into National Service, the yobs could learn a thing or two about respect for others, not just themselves and their supposed "Brethen".

I would like to see old army bases turned into Brat Camps like they have in America by the time they are old enough to go into the army I wouldn't want any of them defending me because I think they would be more dangerous than the enemy, it has to start at a younger age some parents a not able to control their children from as young as 11 years old. A punishment system where they a deprived of treats, tv, computers etc., teaching them that good behaviour could be reward.
If they are taken away from where they feel like top pin when showing off to their friends it would help more.
I think a year is enough time to retrain them so that by the time they are 18 they would be a credit to us whether in the army or any other job.

Yes!
ASBOS don't work (considered a badge of honour among the Chav Scum of this country, apparently) and prisons are training ground for young thugs where they can mix with other, more experienced criminals and become even more hardened.
National Service would give them something useful to do (especially if they get to learn a trade or skill) and might knock some discipline and respect into them. They certainly aren't getting it at home or at school.

Of course it should, in fact it should be compulsory for all. I know people have been saying you are turning them from plain yobs into trained yobs, but those people are missing the point. Once the army has control of them (and God knows nobody else has) they hopefully wont be yobs anymore as they will have learned something they now don't have, RESPECT!. I was in the army myself years ago and there was a saying among the ranks which still holds good today. The army can't you do anything but by F*** they can make you wish you had!!!!

In the days of wellington, the british soldier was considered the scum of the earth. Now all these years later they want to put criminals back in army,However this time the scum is different, its not the criminals for they are the victims of the scum who betrayed our country and ruined it, and they are at the top of the pay scale not the bottom. In saying that, we may have to in order to fill the ranks because, there are many more battles to come i suspect.

Did you do National Service? If you didn't, do you think you turned out alright without it? If you think that, why don't you place the blame for the problem where it really lies, that is with the parents and the authorities.

Certainly the traing might give them some form of respect...yes work them hard......and teach them HOW to work and get rewarded for GOOD behaviour...unfortunatley bullying does exist in the army but as new boys they might recieve some of what they used to dish out !!!!
