Yes, a union may get you much better pay. It also makes employees with seniority get al the good hours, jobs, ect. instead of them being based on merritt. The other downside is the company comes up with very strict policies, so they do have a way of getting rid of unwanted people. Ford Motor Company can suspend an employee for being late to work once. They are part of the UAW, one of the strongest unions in the country. You have to remember unions are not chairty, they work for money and the more they get you, the more they profit. So, it is true that some companies do ship their work overseas to get away from unions.

Unions were very useful in the 30's when worker had no rights. There was no such thing as OSHA, human resources, or many labor laws. We have plenty of rules and regulations established to ensure we get paid and are safe.

Well if it is a closed shop you can't work there otherwise. If it is an openm shop you may be under severe peer pressures to join. Many unions also offer placement in other jobs if for some reason you are displaced from yours. Some also offer additional benefits above those offered by the employer. A good union can be a good thing, they must temper their drive to increase wages and benefits with the understanding that the company involved must remain profitable. This is even more important now that many jobs are being outsourced to 3rd world countries with lower wages, benefits, safety and environmental expenses.

Job security. My husband is in the union and there are up's and down's but he likes the fact his employer has a contract that everyone agreed upon to follow.

simply put, they will ensure that you keep your job unless YOU mess it up. Most jobs there are favorites and those who are focused on in a bad way. A union will help make sure your rights come before anything else.
