What all do I need to know how to do?

A handyman is defined as a person that can do the job or jobs you need done around your home.
A handyman is not capable of doing everything… pressuring a handyman to do work he is not comfortable with may lead to disappointment.
Handymen come in all flavors, sexes, ages and sizes. Not just a male profession any more, handywomen are becoming more and more common. Though people many think of handymen as retirees or part-timers supplementing their incomes, the fact is that thousands of people of all ages are professional handy people who make their living through this work!
So… there are professional and part-time handymen. A pro will most likely have wider experience and hence be a little more costly to hire. A part-time handyman will have a more narrow range of skills but may be more reasonably priced. Here is the first truism about the handyman profession… a handyman's skills are defined by what that specific handyman can do! Since there is no standard handyman profile, each handyman brings to your home different abilities and capabilities. The handyman-roofer may do a great job cleaning gutters or replacing a door lock, but keep him away from the garbage disposal and the toilets. That great handyman/carpenter will professionally renovate your small basement but hide the broken bicycle and the garage door opener.
Here is a list of things that you might be asked to do: ( I can do some of these things myself, not all women have the skills and would need a handyman...or a "Honey’ Do" Husband....lol... to help them or do it for them)

I used a handyman to fix a hole in the ceiling in a stairwell. I could use a handyman to fix the roof or paint the windows on the 2nd and 3rd floors...

Fix a lot of different models of things, know basic plumbing, maintenance etc. Decorating and Painting are always good to fall back on. Have an endorsement from a larger organisation as people are more inclined to trust a registered member,
Also a smile and a please and thank you and a quote that is right and good customer service go a long way as a lot of your business will be through word of mouth :D

not to be a wise-crack,but if you have to ask that you might should find something else to do.as a handyman you will have to know a bit of everything,and a lot about at least a couple of things.

Go visit a lawyer for an opinion. It sounds like the realtor knew about the problem with the drain and failed to disclose it. Did a licensed home inspector provide a report on the house for the bank? If so, who hired that person? The lawyer may determine you have a good case of fraud and negligence against them so could get them to pay for the repairs plus his fees. Sometimes just a letter from a good lawyer will bring them to Jesus.

A handyman should know enough to get a job done, but smart enough to know when a job is to much for them to handle.
Also has GOOD referrals to others who could do the job instead

I need references.
A handyman should be just that...electrical, plumbing, painting, building, whatever projects around the house that need fixing.
He/she should also know the local regulations and do it all legally and up to code.
