Well Grumpy Dufus - just last week it happened here in Colorado. It is eerie. And to make it even worse, it coencided with a bomb threat at the high school here.

Thundersnow is a particularly rare meteorological phenomenon that includes the typical behavior of a thunderstorm, but with snow falling as the primary precipitation instead of rain. It commonly falls in regions of strong upward motion within the cold sector of extratropical cyclones between autumn and spring when surface temperatures are most likely to be near or below freezing.

They can occur during a snowstorm, but very rarely do.
A thunderstorm is not just precipitation, it is a specific type of weather phenominon caused by convective activity, or "heating from below". Search wikipedia for convection or thunderstorm and you will get all the details.

The process is so much different. If you think about it most places that have thunderstorms reaaalll lightening storms that rock your world are in the south. I believe lightening and thunder have something to do with humedity and the air. Well if the air is crisp, cold....then there is no humedity no reason for lightening to strike. Im pretty sure thats the reason

Yes, it's called Thundersnow. It doesn't happen very often. I have been in two in the past seven years or so. I live in Iowa. They are very cool. The thunder is very muted because of the snow in the air.
