Clinical depression is a product of an actual chemical imbalance within your body. Where as event onset depression can usually be overcome after time, the chemical imbalance does not usually go away on its own, and often requires some sort of therapy, prescription meds, or some other form of resolution. Some meds make people worse, while others seem to level them off. You need to find which meds work best for that individual. (if that is the path of treatment choosen.)
Personally, clinical depression is a evil that I have fought almost all my life. I was on and off a varity of different meds as a child and young person, but I never really felt funtional on the meds... they made me numb to everything and I hated feeling that way more then I hated being depressed. I took myself off of meds (against Doctors orders) and have felt generally better. I still have days i'd rather just lay in my bed in the dark, but with the help of family and my dogs I think that I'm better at the moment.
I have been told that this is a life long battle, however, it is my intention to someday overcome.

If you had it that long it probably wouldn't go away on its own.
You can try making some positive changes in your life, like hanging around positive people, going to school to learn a trade you like, etc., but if that doesn't help you might want to seek treatment.
I have had a form of depression since childhood and now that I am 40 (and my life is better than it has ever been) I will say that it does seem to get worse. I really don't know why. Everyone is probably different though, so don't go by my experience.
If you are worried about it, maybe you should see a psychiatrist. He or she should be able to help you find out if you are really depressed, how bad, and what you can do about it.

It really depends. Sometimes there are perfectly good reasons to be depressed, loss of family members, spouses, divorce, and the list goes on. It should go away providing that you're dealing with it and facing the problem. If it's already been a year, there might be a problem. Maybe something like being manic depressive. It's not a bad idea to go in and see someone about it. A therapist or counselor can further explain what might be a problem or it might not be...
Hope everything is well.

There are basically 2 causes of depression: endogenous (from a chemical imbalance) and exogenous or situational (from an external circumstance). Both are treatable but one has to determine which is it? Sometimes it's both. A professional (Doctor or therapist) would be the best place to start if you are confused about what might be the cause of your depression. As for whether or not it will get worse, that depends again on the cause and what you end up doing about it.Good luck to you.

I have been suffering from depression for 10 years now. I have it under control with meds (Cymbalta) and counseling. I asked the same question to my thereapist and was informed that it won't go away. It is a disease. But it can be treated and managed. As long as I take my meds and continuing my counseling I keep it managed and under control.

It doesn't just go away by itself. Either you do something about it, or you don't. I'm not sure if it gets any worse.
