It's good, but not a patch on Lord of the rings I am afraid

Yeah brilliant trilogy but nowhere near the best. Obviously the afor mentioned L o t R's is the original and the best, but there is also the warlord trilogy by bernard cornwell, the rift war trilogy by raymond e feist, memory sorrow and thorn by tad williams, the first chronicles of thomas covenant by stephen donaldson and the jerusalem man trilogy by the late & great David Gemmell to name but a few. In fact i have often wondered why the fantasy author is so attracted to trilogies almost everyone has done atleast one 3 set out there with some authors writing trilogies exclusively. Why not make the books bigger and only write two in a series or do they just do it for the money that three books will bring them an sod the readers

Hmm, I can't honestly pick a favourite trilogy, there are so many good ones but I do think it's a stunning bit of literature. Certainly the best written in the last few years.
Lots of people seem to dislike the last book, but I loved it - I found it very poignant and moving. Perhaps it gets a bit heavy handed at times, but I can forgive that. After all, he's following the fine example of Mr. C.S. Lewis in that regard! ;) (Don't tell Pullman I made that comparison!)

There are other fantasy series I enjoyed too, but the books were fascinating to read. They cannot be compared to The Lord of the Rings as the ideas are so different, but very clever and original.
Also can't wait for the film. The creature I look forward to most is the snow leopard! I wonder if they train a real one....?

I disagree, I prefer The Crystal Singer trilogy by Anne McCaffrey and the trilogy of Rim, Mir and Chi by Alexander Besher.

I wouldn't say that they are the best trilogy ever written however they are very good. For me the best trilogy ever would have to be either 'The Black Magician Trilogy' by Trudi Canavan or 'The Farseer Trilogy' by Robin Hobb.

Yes! It is AMAZING! I was lucky enough to hear Philip Pullman speak at a meeting of publishers and librarians, he was very very interesting to listen to.

The first volume "Northern Lights" is brilliant, but the second two fall off badly. Mervyn Peake's "Gormenghast" trilogy is far superior.

I just finish the first book, I thought it was pretty amazing. I'm now working on the second one and what I've read so far is just as good as the first book.
