I live in NY and I usually drive across the states in the North east. I'm sure that some laws/rules are different for driving in each state like the number of points for violations might vary depending on the state. I have recently discovered that in Connecticut if you do anything other than driving (like even eating/cell phone talk) you can be fined for $100 which is a good thing to remember while driving through CT. Are there anymore such useful tips ?

In CT, cops are pretty rough on speeders. Out-of-state drivers account for nearly 50% of all speeding tickets. The stretch of I-84 through Union, CT is reported to be the absolute worst for this in CT. If you're from out of state and you don't respond to your CT traffic ticket, your home state will suspend your driver's license (that may be true everywhere though) A friend of mine was pulled over on 95 for speeding and a broken taillight. In all, it was $400.

For first offenders: In NY, you need proof of insurance with you at all times or else you will get a $150-$1500 fine, maximum 15-days in jail. In CT, you still have to have it with you at all times but if you don't, the penalty is that your registration is suspended.

(just don't do it anyway) DUI/DWI: In CT for a first offense: 1 year suspended license; 6 month jail sentence, with 48 hours mandatory minimum jail time, or a suspended sentence with 100 hours of community service; fine from $500-$1000. The DMV has separate penalties that they ADD to these (may only be if you have a CT license) You cannot refuse to take a breathalyzer test. If they arrest you and you refuse the test your license will be suspended for a minimum of 6 months. (I think it's the same in most states but in NY you still have to take one, but have a right to call a DWI lawyer before you do)

In Colorado--if you don't have your id or drivers licence on you at all times, they can get you for truancy. even if you are just walking down the street to the store to get a pop and then walk home, if you don't have identification, they will arrest you and keep you there until you can prove identity.
