This question came out in the British press a couple of years ago, the answer is yes, they do! (They tested what a fish's pain threshold was) needless to say, it wasn't a very good one!

Yes.
Strictly speaking, a philosopher will tell you that we have no way of knowing whether an animal (or indeed another person) feels pain. However, the recent studies which people are telling you about clearly show that being caught on a hook generates electrical activity in parts of the fish's brain analogous to electrical activity in the brain of a human who reports pain. Given this knowledge it would be highly perverse to maintain the position that fish do not feel pain. Historically, many people believed that fish did not feel pain but they did not have the knowledge made available by recent scientific advances.

My brother and his friend are avid Carp fishermen, I think its brutal, they say fish don't feel pain, but I don't beleive that for a second, I like it when they shiver at the side of a loch for a week and dont get one 'bite' they complain Carp are the cleverst fish, and are hard to catch, I told them Carp probably don't like bein harpooned through the head just for their enjoyment, sit there all week, catch one fish if lucky, throw it back in - WHATS THE POINT???????

Yes they do; they have nerve endings in their mouths and pain receptors.
They have all the equipment for pain response and evasion; all species that have this feel the pain they are trying to avoid.
Fish also suffer from stress and throwing them back can cause them to pick up fungal diseases.
If you fish, please eat what you catch.

As a long time fisherman I am sorry to say yes they do. It does help a little if you use barbless hooks. Barbless hook do increase the percentage of them living. Remember !!! Eat what you catch and only catch what you will eat.

Studies by scientists which took place in 2003 indicated that 'yes' they do feel pain although it is still a matter of debate.

Research a couple of years ago showed that yes, they do. Hasn't stopped people fishing though.

I don't know, but it's bad enough for them to be pulled out of the water and handled, that would frighten them badly so it's bad either way...
