I'm with you, it's disgusting.
Do the candidates actually think we'll believe them? I hope not. But then again, advertising of any kind works on the majority of people. If it didn't we wouldn't have a gazillion types of shampoo, soap, body lotion, body wash, (my personal favorite SOAP at highly inflated prices) toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant, razors, perfume, the list is horrendous. And the average consumer is convinced that they will be sent to a leper's colony IF they don't buy the miracle product.
But please VOTE!!
Peace.

It's a joke! So much os the bashing is on issues that Congress doesn't even have a say on.
Take the abortion issue. Like it or hate it, it's legal and the only branch that has a say in that is the Supreme Court and there is no way in hell they would over-rule the prior Court. None
Why is this a campaign issue at all? I think it's mostly by challenegers who really have no idea what the job entails.
Congress doesn't run the country - they are the legislative branch. If they stuck with what they could bring to the job, they would have a better chance. The negative ads make me want to vote early and ignore tv until after the elections.

I agree! I too can't wait until the elections are over. The ads get nastier and nastier. The republicans are trying to stay away from Bush right now. Their ads seem to focus on everything but Bush and the war in Iraq. They also try to make the word "liberal" seem like a dirty word. The democrats negative ads are usually brought on by trying to defend themselves from the "liberal" label. With the new voting machines in place, who knows who will really win... Heaven help us all!

No, they don't influence me, except to recoil from the person whose campaign said them. It's why I'm seriously considering 3rd party and have been threatening my neighbors that I'll write their names in for governor and senator.
The sad thing is how effective these negative campaign ads are. They can only appeal to idiots and shallow people who can't think deeper than bumper-sticker sound-bytes. If people actually heed these ads, one cannot expect them to actually be bothered to make informed voting decisions. It is this vapidity that has allowed the government to take our rights and freedoms.
When this country was founded, only allowing property owners to vote, they knew what they were doing. Universal suffrage has the unfortunate effect of giving the illiterate, ignorant ditchdigger the same voting power as the intelligent and thoughtful job creators. And we all know there are more idiots than intellects.

Si mply turn off any negative ads.. by either party. I am a teacher and I would not put up with this childishness from my students.. why should I have to listen to it from my government. Billions of dollars spent in advertising campaigns that are purely stupid and self serving. i am ashamed of both parties in this respect.
And yet they keep on insisting that this negativity works for them.. I would like to hear from someone who makes up their mind how to vote because they heard a negative smear ad... lets hear from you... altho' I would imagine that person is way too dumb to be able to even turn on a computer.
It is just ridiculous that politicians are so out of touch with people that they think all we need to hear is a bunch of lies from both sides to decide which liar we vote for... they make me sick!
* Added comment from a co worker...
Never ever watch the crap... and anyone who does should not even consider voting .. if they need a negative ad to help them decide. It is all childish and disgusting and insulting to the voter.. we are not all illiterate fools.. we can judge the politician on what they have done... not by what they tell us they might do.. or tell us what the other guy didn't do. Most of it is lies. Do they really think we believe any of this crap?

I'm Canadian, and unfortunately some of our politicians stoop to this method of campaigning as well. I agree, politicians should base their campaigns on their own beliefs, policies and what they can do for the people that are voting for them. I personally would not vote for someone whose only campaign strategy is mud-slinging. I too am tired of watching these commercials on American channels!

For the first time one of those ads is going to make me vote... against the guy slinging the mud!
This particular politician has sunk so low in his attack, I cannot respect him anymore.
Previously I was not going to vote for either, but now I am voting with the sole purpose of keeping someone out of office, not putting someone in.
That's pathetic.

I can barely tolerate to watch television--and I can only do it if I have the remote in hand to immediately hit the mute button. I already know who I will vote for. These ads are sickening already. And that rediculous, "I'm so and so and I approved this message" is so grating on my nerves. It's like one guy said that, now every single political message has to say it...c'mon, give me something new.

Yeah me too. My husband and I were just talking about that the other day. With all the negativity going on I can hardly tell what these people are actually like. I don't know what they stand for and I don't know what their plans are once they get into office. It would be nice for once to see someone stand up and talk about themselves. Odd, I never thought I'd say that...
