Thanks for looking at this, I know this is slightly out of place, but I couldn't find a hunting or camping section.

I am looking for a pocket knife that isn't too large, thick, bulky, etc, but I want a blade longer than 1.5". My main purpose for this knife would be for cutting tape and string (I own a horse and opening haybales is almost an everyday occurance). Basically, I would like a thin knife that has a 2-3" blade.

My question is if you know of any place (website or store) I could get one? Also, I don't have a lot to spend on a knife. Only $20-30.

you can spend less than $20 on a pocket knife that'll dull and/or break within a few weeks of regular use, or you can spend $50-$80 and get one that'll last a lifetime. then again, if you're only cutting tape and string, a cheap one should do you just fine.

go to any kind of hunting/sporting goods/army surplus store, and just look for folding knives. if you're cutting string & tape, you'll want a knife with a partially serrated blade - the serrated edge cuts string/rope/cord much better than a regular straight edge.

pay attention to the type of lock on the knife. there are two major kinds: liner-lock, and lock-back. the liner lock has a strip of metal inside the handle, where the blade comes from, which you move sideways to close the knife. this allows for one-handed operation, but you'ev got to be careful, because you can accidentally close it while using it, and cut your fingers. a lock-back has a rob on the back edge of the knife, which you must press to close the blade. this makes it nearly impossible to close while using it, and requires two hands.

anyway, for places, try ebay, amazon.com (i got a pack of 20 cheap knives for $20!), or any sporting goods store in your area.

When you consider what other items are completely harmless by itself, but can be abused to attack someone, it sounds ridiculous to suddenly allow pocket knives on planes. Since there is no conceivable need of any kind to use a pocket knife during the flight for ANY passenger, these new rules only add to the risk of injury or death in case of an attack. Much like an ice pick, a knife with a small blade can, under the right circumstances and on the right body part, kill a person instantly! On another note: the head of the TSA said, that this move would bring the USA into alignment with international rules, but this is largely untrue. I've flown a lot between Europe, Asia and Australia, but I have made different experiences. I don't claim to know about the issue of pocket knives, but I know for a fact, that sporting utensils (like golf clubs, ski poles or various sticks) are generally not allowed as carry-on luggage anywhere I've flown.

Try looking in the sports section of Wal-Mart, k-Mart, etc. They keep them under lock and key. I have a little Buck knife that suits my purposes just fine. It holds a edge and it's not bulky. I've learned from past experience that if you are going to invest money in something, don't go too cheap because that's exactly what you get. You can try posting your queston in the hunting section. It's under Sports, then Outdoor Recreation, which has fishing and hunting.

Try the Shrade Old-Timer series. Mine (I forget what model) has 2 blades, the larger of which is about 2-1/4" long. I paid around $22 for it. Folded, it is about 3-1/4" long. it is just under 1/2" wide. It has carbon steel blades which have darkened, but never rusted and they hold an edge forever. I bought it at K-Mart eons ago (at least 10 years ago). They're still sold for around $20 or so.

Swiss Army Knives are good...I have a pink one too!
Also, Leatherman makes good knives and all-in-one gadgets.
