Because the preacher of the town had a son who was killed in an accident and he relatedthat to drinking and partying and felt it (dancing, having fun) was shameful, so he banned dancing and music. I like the scene when Kevin Bacon pulls up blaring rock music. At the end, the dad lets them have a dance.

Great movie.
It was actually on last night!
And there are actually places like that. The school I went to was like that. It was run by Southern Baptist missionaries who felt that dancing was evil and a sin. So we didn't have a prom; instead, we had a "Junior/Senior Banquet". No dancing, just dinner and some entertainment (usually a comedian or magician or some other "fun" activity). Not bad, but my friends and I did sneak out to clubs once in awhile. (I lived in a dorm, so they were even strict about the music we listened to (our dorm parents had to screen the music first), the movies we saw (no R rated movies), etc...pretty strict. Good structure, but a little TOO sheltered, if you ask me now...

That was the whole point! They were banned from doing these things because the parents blamed the deaths of some teens on those things. Kevin Bacon's character used bible verses to say that dancing and music were not only not evil, but done by those close to Jesus (or something like that). And then they all danced liked it was 1999.

That's a classic film. The town has rules against dancing because it encourages immoral behavior. There are lots of other rules too. They have lots of banned books too. It was a good movie. One of the first to have a good soundtrack. Those weren't very popular in America for a very long time.

It became fantastically cheesy and extremely such as the unique. I went and observed it with a chum, and we thought it became stable. The plot became fantastically effortless. it would have been PG if no longer for all the regularly occurring cussing. So, yeah. It in basic terms relies upon on what type of action pictures you like. some stable jokes, dancing, and a few action have been in there, yet I left slightly underwhelmed.

Saw it in the theatres, ( ack I just dated my self)
They were a very religious town, and didn't believe in that type of music and dancing. It was evil. But the kids finally proved them wrong. Good movie back in the day.

They didn't have the prom in the actual town to appease the preacher's wishes. They had it in a neighboring town!
