I hear "on" line in news casts, in television shows, etc.

I think people use both interchangeably. It also seems to be a regional thing...i.e. people from the South say it one way, people from the North say it a different way.

I still think that standing "in" a line is correct, but it may have come from people actually standing "on" a visible line, so that could be right also!

Ive never said "on line" unless it was involving the computer...unless youve got a really slow internet connection, then that could make sense. Where did you see this? If it was written it could have been a typo or an ignorant person
