My son (11 months old) has been sick for the past 2 days. He has a fever (101-102 degrees over the course of the past few days), has about 4 soiled diapers each day, and loss of appetite. We called the doctor and they said to stop giving him milk and to call again if he wasn't better in a few days. Now we have not been giving him milk and it has been a few days, he is still sick. They won't give us an appointment until tomarrow morning. What can I do in the meantime to help my son? I am already giving him medicine and trying to get him to eat/drink as much as possible.

My daughter was sick a few weeks ago with a fever that just wouldn't go away too. They told me to alternate between the Tylenol and the Mortin every 4 hours. If she was still warm and the fever wasn't going down to take a luke warm rag and rub her down with it. It brings the fever down a little and helps them relax a little too. I was told that if the fever got up to 104 to call immediately. They always wanted to her drink as much as possible. Pediasure is what I used since it has all the vitamins/nutrients they need. After that she just wanted to be held and to sleep. We put movies in and just snuggled together. Cuddle him and comfort him as much as possible.
Hope he feels better soon.

Several things, most importantly, make him as comfortable as possible. Offer fun videos if he likes tv, lots of cuddle time, and maybe a special toy. For the fever, use Tylenol and/or Motrin if you're not already. Keep him hydrated (not sure about stopping the milk, if he won't drink anything else, give him milk and if he refuses to eat the milk may keep his tummy full so he's not miserable. You might try switching to a soy-based infant formula for the duration of his sickness, to be sure it is not lactose related). If he doesn't feel like eating, don't force it, but do provide things that are easy to snack on through out the day. Leave a small bowl of cheerios on the coffee table, so even if he just feels like eating one, he can. Try applesauce (they make fun new kinds, flavored with blueberries, strawberries, bananas, different apple varieties such as granny smith, peaches, mangoes, etc. Trying something new may entice him to take a few bites.) Remember that eating ANYTHING is better than eating NOTHING. Even if he just takes a single bite of applesauce, yogurt, oatmeal, etc, he is getting more nutrition than if he hadn't eaten anything at all!

Also, your pediatrician's office should be more willing to trust your instincts as a parent and see your child immediately when sick. My son's pediatrician (he is 14 months old), offers appointments the same day, and usually within an hour of your call! They have a Nurse Practitioner to see sick babies even when the doctor is not available, and an Urgent Care Clinic that remains open until 10p.m. for babies who get worse after office hours. You may need to shop around for a better pediatrician!

Good Luck!

If he has had a fever for more then 3 days I would take him to urgent care..not the emergency room but most towns have a place you can go when you can't get into the doctor and you need to be seen. He may have an ear infection or something else that needs to be taken care of. To help keep the fever down you can give him a luke warm bath and dress him in light clothing with a light blanket so if he gets too warm you can remove the blanket. And make sure you keep him hydrated with fluids like water or pedialyte, no juice or soda because they tend to dehydrate.

Try to get his fever down first of all. Give him infant tylenol every 4-6 hours, and try putting a cool wash cloth on his head. A nice cool bath sometimes works as well. If his fever doesn't go down, then I would take him to the ER. A fever can sometimes be a dangerous thing if it gets too high, so keep a close eye on it. I'm surprised that your doctor is letting this go until tomorrow! I'd call back and ask them to try to fit you in. If they can't, then consider the ER. Even if it's nothing, you'll feel better in the end.

Your child may be cutting some teeth and is manifesting a fever because of that. Have you tried to give him Tempra? This fever reducer and pain reducer seems to work the fastest. The child's appetite is low because he is not feeling well. Try feeding him some soft foods and soups. Every little bit counts. Children are growing and therefore need nourishment. Babies are very strong they can withstand a lot more than adults. Give your child as much as you can and stay as calm as possible, because the little ones are sensitive to the parents' anxiety.

try giving your baby pedialyte or a diluted gatorade . The fever he has is causing the milk to sour on his stomach. An old home remedy from the mountains of NC that has helped my children alot is take fresh or frozen blackberries and mix equal amount of water to berries (ex. 1/2 c blackberries 1/2 c water and 2 tblsps sugar) boil till berries are cook and strain making a juice, let the baby drink as warm as possible, this soothes stomach and stops excessive soiled diapers, this can be repeated every 3 hours.

Glorious, twenty years in the past I had a son who didn't live on. Many men and women attempted to inform me it was once a blessing on the grounds that by means of being born so early he could have had many disabilities. But I used to paintings in a nursing residence and noticed dozens and dozens of men and women within the 90s and even over one hundred who did not recognize who they had been or in which they had been and plenty of cash was once being spent on their care. Also, there have been younger men and women in comas on the grounds that they'd had under the influence of alcohol riding injuries or something. So I felt that if society was once going to maintain all the ones men and women alive, who had already loved lengthy, complete years, that society would maintain my child alive. Because how do we all know that anything may not be determined to aid the ones toddlers? Last night time anyone requested wasn't infanticide an essential aspect of survival of the fittest, and used the historical Spartans as an instance. There is an ethicist at Princeton University who reportedly thinks it will have to be authorized to train infanticide on any child more youthful than 28 days ancient in an effort to put off in poor health or undesirable toddlers from society. So we're relocating as a society in that path.

Get him to a doctor now. Fever for a few days with loose stool and your doctor said to stop giving him milk? Did he say anything about pedialyte to combat dehydration? If it was my child I would immediatly find an all hours clinic or just resign myself to going to the emergency room. I do not play around with infants as my personal experience has made me very cautious.

Don't worry a ton about the food side of things, but push fluids for sure. Get some pedialite, popsicles, continue with the tylenol every 4-6 hours, and increase the fluids, as he may be getting dehydrated from the diahrea, which will make him more sleepy. Check with the doctor tomorrow. GOod luck, he will be fine.

Do not push the food and liquids. As long as he is getting a little water or pedialite, he won't dehydrate. If you push the food, and he vomits, or gets diarrea, he will only dehydrate, and feel much worse. If you are giving him motrin, or tylenol, rotate between the two, then you don't have to worry about giving him too much of either. Follow directions on label for his size though.
