FIRST OF ALL, MAKE SURE YOUR MASCARA ISN'T OLD, IF IT IS OLD, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT USING IT. SECOND, NEVER CURL YOUR EYELASHES AFTER YOU PUT MASCARA ON, BIG NO NO!!! THAT'S WHAT CAUSES MOST CLUMPING IN THE FIRST PLACE. THIRD, HAVE YOU PUT EYESHADOW ON YET? IF NOT, THAT IS WHAT YOU WANT TO DO, YOUR MASCARA SHOULD ALWAYS BE LAST. NOW HERE'S THE TRICKY PART, IF YOU HAVE USED EYESHADOW AND HAVE GOTTEN IT ON YOUR LASHES, YOU NEED TO START AT THE BASE OF YOUR TOP LASHES. START ON THE TOP SIDE, GLIDE AND ROLL UPWARD AND TOWARDS YOU THIS WILL HELP KEEP THE CURL IN PLACE. NEXT START AT THE BASE OF YOUR TOP LASHES ON THE BOTTOM SIDE. GLIDE AND ROLL AWAY FROM YOU. FAN YOUR LASHES OUT WITH YOUR MASCARA BRUSH AS YOU ARE APPLYING MASCARA, THERE SHOULD NEVER BE ANY NEED FOR A SEPERATE MASCARA COMB. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. NOW IN REFERENCE TO YOUR BOTTOM LASHES, IF YOU HAVE MAKE UP ON THEM, HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO, APPLY MASCARA ON THEM BUT THEN YOU NEED TO WIPE IT AWAY. THIS IS TO GET YOUR LASHES LOOKING NATURAL AGAIN INSTEAD OF LOOKING LIKE THEY HAVE DIRT ON THEM. NOW IF YOU ARE ONLY GOING TO APPLY MASCARA ON, AND NO OTHER MAKE UP, YOU ONLY NEED TO DO THE BOTTOM SIDE OF YOUR TOP LASHES. ALSO, FOR THE WAND POSITION FOR BOTH TOP AND BOTTOM LASHES, YOU NEED TO HOLD YOUR WAND PARALLEL TO THEM. ALSO, DON'T MOVE YOUR HEAD, YOU HAVE BETTER CONTROL OF YOUR HANDS. IF I MISSED ANYTHING EMAIL ME.

if you're worried about it getting too thick, get a more natural-looking formula like Maybelline Full n Soft instead of a volumizing kind. Maybe try brown instead of black, that could help it to not look so thick, clumpy and harsh. Another trick is to pat the mascara wand with a tissue after taking it out of the tub to get rid of any excess product.
As for application technique, just hold the wand horizontal to your top lashes and wiggle it back and forth as you move it up your lashes. This gives a more even coat than just simply swiping. I would say that applying mascara to your bottom lashes is not really necessary unless you're going to a party or something like that--for everyday makeup wear, it's just a bit much, especially if you're worried about making your lashes look too gunky anyway.
One more thing, to make your lashes look thicker at the base without clumpy mascara, after applying your mascara as I described above, use an eyeliner in a matching color to draw a very thin line very close to your lash line on your upper eyelid. You won't really be able to tell that you even have eyeliner on, it'll just make your eyelashes appear thicker and make your eyes really stand out.
If your lashes still look to clumpy for you, run an eyelash comb through. Another thing to remember is NEVER curl AFTER applying your mascara! This can cause breakage and additional clumping. ALWAYS curl before

Apply some transluscent powder to your lashes, then hold the wand to the base of your lashes and moveit side-to-side and up, like you're combing through them. For the bottom, do the same.

It very much depends on the type of mascara you use. Mine is Clinique right now and I'm quite happy with it. Cheap stuff usually requires a lot of effort to look nice. Be careful as to not put too much - especially on the bottom. Most important - don't do it in a hurry, at least in the beginning. Take your time in front of the mirror and practice :)

Put it only on the top, put the bush at the base of your lashes the as you pull it through twist the brush. Then use a lash comb and then curl them. It will look amazing.

don't put mascara on your bottom eyelashes untill you have a professional show you. honnestly, it's the best way to learn. that, or ask one of your friends to show you how to do it correctly. it's too hard to explain the motion i do on the internet. lol. but for top lashes, go up, then use a brow comb to separate and a lash curler to curl it.

use a eyelash comb, or don't put mascara on bottom lashes. use a eyeliner with a clear mascara and you get a better effect and no clumping! That's what I do!

it might be the type of mascara you have....if you buy cheap stuff its going to look cheap and clumpy....try brands like maybelline. you could try holding the wand and blinking your eyelashes against it to get it on your top lashes. i sweep it across my bottom eye lashes....and if you screw it up....just use a q-tip with some make-up remover on it to define it better!
