Difficult one that one. I was not around in Japan at the time of the Edo-period, which by all accounts was not a peaceful one.
If you mean those lovely little gardens with Bonsai, a little bridge and a lady in a Japanese costume with a parasol, they are brilliant as space savers and give a lot of pleasure to people who live in apartments with no balconies.
