I think homeschooled kids are smarter than public schooled kids. They are more mature also. I would say being smart and mature is COOL!! You are very lucky if you are homeschooled. I wish I could have homeschooled my kids!

Homeschoolers can definitely be a breed of their own, but I was homeschooled from 5th grade all the way through high-school and I'll tell you what, no where else have I met such a diverse, all around kind, and all around intelligent group of people.

Most homeschoolers tend to be seen as socially challeneged because most homeschoolers are not around nearly as many peers as public schooleres growing up. Therefore, when they get around kids their age, they don't feel entirely comfortable and don't exactly know how to act. Conversely, most homeschoolers fair damn well with adults because they've spent so much time around their parents and their parents' friends.

Mainly though, if you ever find yourself in a social situation with some homeschoolers you have deemed "uncool", try stepping back and taking an open minded approach towards them. Because chances are, if you give them a chance to warm up to you and feel comfortable around you, you'll probably realize exactly what I came to realize, that they are some of the nicest and most intelligent bunch you'll ever meet...

I think it depends on the individual children/family.

I'm considering homeschooling and I have had experience teaching. The benefits I can think of are the small classroom size, real life hands-on practical learning, and possibly faster academic advancement depending on child's desires and abilities.

In this state the law says that unless your child is unvaccinated or a complete terror, they can participate in extracurricular activities provided by the local school system. So they could join sports teams and clubs and socialize with their peers. Also, with required standardized testing each year, at some point if the child wanted to be part of the public school system, they could be appropriately placed.

Children don't have to be completely blocked off from the outside world or their peers.

Anti-social, you mean? Well I take correspondence courses and to be honest with you, I am very anti-social but it has nothing to do with school. I just have trust issues with people because of bad experiences I've been through in my life. But, I am taking other religion courses on the side, I go to the gym on a regular basis and I do once a week volunteering, so it's not as if I am a hobbit that never goes out anywhere. I just don't like mingling too much with people, I find that it gets me into trouble, and I would rather avoid any unnessecary stress.

Hi Amanda.

There are a lot of advantages for children to be home-schooled. Also, homeschoolers can get the same social interaction as other children by going to church functions, by playing with the neighborhood children, by joining sports such as little league, etc.

having 1 reasonable teacher (i.e. the parent) with one or two children is usually going to give a better education than a trained teacher in front of 25 kids.

home schooling doesn't mean you are anti social. they can still do things like team sports, maybe they go to drama classes, theres lots of things they can do. they still have friends and stuff. In fact because they usually spend less time in lessons they have more time to do these other things that kids enjoy.

I THINK THAT SOMETIMES THEY MAY SEEM A BIT ODD; CUZ THEY DONT GET OUT AND SOCILALIZE ENOUGHT LIKE THE KIDS IN PUBLIC SCHOOL'S DO. IM NOT SAYING THEY ARE MENTAL,WEIRD OR NOT COOL BUT I THINK THEY NEED TO SOCIALIZE WITH KIDS TO SEE WHAT LIFE REALLY IS ABOUT AND TO SEE ALL ISSUES WE GO THROUGH; SO THEY CAN LEARN HOW TO HANDLE THRE OWN ISSUES.

I don't think you're cool because of what school you go to. I think they may have a harder time socially not being around peers but all and all I think they grow up fine.

I think home-schooling is generally a bad idea. Most parents don't have the expertise in enough areas to effectively teach their children. I've seen some kids who came out of home schools that were excellent students, but they are most assuredly the exception. Parents should be parents, and leave the teaching to credentialed and well-trained teachers.
