I think the world will be a very different place in 50 years from now - as it was 50 years AGO. Technology is here to stay and we will become so dependent on it that we will be unable to function without it. Many skills will be lost - as they already have been. (e.g. microwaving frozen food and serving as dinner has replaced home cooking - a dying art in many parts of the world)

I can actually visualize a time when all newborn humans will be genetically programmed and then implanted with microchips for all kinds of things including identification, communicating with others, for diagnosing disease and illness as a preventative measure and for learning purposes. Technology is racing ahead without much thought for ethical or moral reasoning - as it always has. Nuclear weapons are an excellent example of this. We have the technology to blow ourselves to smithereens but does that make it right? The scientists responsible for creating our brave new world - should be looking at all the social and ethical implications before applying them. I believe that it will not be anything technological that ends up destroying life as we know it - it will be something biological - e.g. some fungus or infection that will wipe out whole cities and small countries and that technology will prove useless to our defence. It would be nice to think that we will all end up in some kind of Star Trek kind of Utopia with all humans using technology for the good of all the universe - but I do not think this will be the reality.

Evolution is good. Knowledge is good, also. We have to have the wisdom to use them. If we do that, i think it would be good to have new technology. Otherwise, we might accelerate our way to destruction.
