Great question! How do we know that what we perceive as real life isn't actually a dream and when we die, we are merely waking up? How do we know that machines haven't taken over our world decades ago and we are all in pods while our minds are plugged into a matrix?
Well........generally we don't and that's why these questions are so much fun. We are equipped with tools to perceive our world, but that's all they are, tools that tell us certain things about our world, but there is no way we can ever know what it really is like. Maybe what we perceive as green is really pink....
But I would say it is the detail of our everyday life experiences, your nose itching, the feel of the carpet under your feet that tells you that your not in a dream.

If you're in a coma and you are hallucinating, you can't know.
Now, if you do something, like walk on the ceiling or fly out the window and stafe downtown, then chances are you're in a coma, hallucinating or those are some really, really good mushrooms.
