Because it's your enviroment, which you are familiar with. Something like bringing visitors to your own town and showing them around, because you know what is what. (Sorry, poor analogy).
Also, because of the home fans, who can give you all the support and boo the visiting team. Believe me, it does have an effect.

Comfort and confidence! When you play on your home ground, you are already accostomed to the pitch, you have 75%+ fans screaming in your favour, which can be rather intimidating for an opposing team.
From your family and friends being there, and the food, even to the dressing and training rooms: Its a psychological advantage!

Recent research showed that referees are more likely to hand out cards to the visiting team. So one more advantage to add for playing at home.

The Crowds and The environment make the difference.
The crowds act as the 12th person on the pitch.....
The crowds sure can intimidate the opponents team.

it's a psychological ego boost. You're on your own territory, it's your turf. Anyone coming to the ground is an invader and you feel inspired to protect what is yours. It's very territorial.

You are used to the climate, have your fans behind you, know the lumps and bumps of the pitch, are used to the size, are comfortable in your dressing room, don't have to travel.. blah blah blah... lots of reasons why....
