My sister is the worst 'gagger' in the world (Ie she'll smell that the milk is off and wrech with a horrible AGH! noise). She has just had a baby and I was thinking to buy her a mask to wear while she changes nappies. Some friends/family have said this is not a good idea as it may frighten her child, but he's only a month old and I don't think he'll notice at all - any one got any ideas? Is there a dust-mask / scarf device commercially available for this? (Please don't suggest a darth vader mask, I've heard it from everyone!)

Truthfully, I've found that the initial smell from the baby isn't that bad... it's when the used diapers sit around that the smell gets bad. Get her a Diaper Genie disposal system.

But, if it does get to her, tell her to buy some Mentholatum (you know the stuff mom used to put on your chest when you were little and had a chest cold?) and just dab a bit under her nose right before the diaper change, then wipe it off right after. The Menthol smell will block all the stinkie nappie odor 100%

I don't think it is a good gift idea your heart is in the right place but being a new mother she is far to busy to take the time to put on a mask when she changes the babies diaper. How about a Diaper Genie instaed it puts the diapers in a little sealed garbage can like thing so that don't stink up your house.

I've read in some books (fictional) that when doing a PM of a particularly smelly decomposed body some morticians put Vicks vaporub under their noses to overcome the bad smell. This may work for your sister without scaring the baby!

Hope it works!

get a strong air freshener, one of those ones with an on/off switch. She should turn it on before changing the diaper, and then can turn it off after. Will make the house smell nice too.

well when the baby is on formula, their poop doesn't really smell that bad, i'm sure though when it does start to smell like around 10 mos. when she starts feeding him more solids she can make a joke of it by that time with the baby and putting something around her nose.

When i change my baby if the smell bothers me i just put my shirt over my nose and she think it is funny.

i just have a wet wipe hanging from my mouth and keep moving your head to your shoulder you get a whiff of the wet wipe then. if that fails a peg would do it or you could change them for her. x
