On the first antenatal visit, What is she looking for exactly? I mean, obviously the baby but how can they tell which way up the baby is and stuff?
And can you learn to do it your self?

she will try to feel your uterus, which doesn't come out of the pelvis until around 12weeks, she may be able to get a rough idea how far you are.if she can feel it.
she wont be able to feel the baby at this time.
my midwife tried to show me how to feel the uterus but i still cant and im on baby number 5 .
wouldn't hurt to ask yours if she could show you.
good luck and congratulations x x x x

They've been doing this for years and can identify the parts of the baby.

As they baby grows, you'll get better and better at it. I could always tell which bump was head and which bump was bum. Then elbows and knees become very obvious. Get the daddy involved, it's fun to play name that bump!!!

Good luck!

Congrats on the pregnancy. She is feeling the size of growth of your uterus. It should grow about a cm a week. It helps to see if the baby is growing normally.

Ask her next time!
She's also feeling to make sure your body is OK, not just the infant. Your uterus (womb) is growing and moving and she's checking that, for one.
