No. The theme music was always the same.

Lived in Oxford for 28 years and Inspector Morse was always being banded about in the local paper. As a result I always thought that was true. Aren't there always a few beeps at the start BEFORE the actual music. Isn't that the morse code bit???

Not from the opening music, that was the same every time, but I heard that some of the incidental music used during the episode would give the name of the murderer in morse code, as the incidental music was always slightly different.

Never manged to figure out if it was true!

I always thought that the morse code bit was the word "Morse". So no not the name of the murderer but the name of the programme. Quite clever really!

In a word, no. The morse code just spells out Inspector Morse's name. I have a friend who's a radio ham and he listened to the opening theme and 'decoded' it.

I remember hearing that in an interview with colin dexter years ago. He said it was the morse code bit just before the title music started

No idea, but I like the idea of Morse Cod. Grumpy old fish, crusing around the North Atlantic solving aquatic murders, getting involved in failed-from-the-start relationships with doting younger Haddock, falling out with sidekick Flounder... etc etc
