Counter
a running play in which the running back will take a step in the opposite direction of the play, only to get the handoff in the other direction. Weak side linemen will sometimes pull and lead the back downfield (sometimes called a counter trap), but not necessarily. The play is designed to get the defense to flow away from the action for a few steps, allowing more room for the running back.

It is a play that sets up as a run to one side but actually goes to the other side.

Usually a gaurd or takle pulls to the other side of the line to pick up a linebacker or a defensive end and the running back fakes one way and runs behind the pulling lineman.

Counter is a miss direction play. often set up by motion, the idea is to give the appearance the play is going one direction and you counter that by going the opposite direction.
