Schools don't stress it anymore because they assume kids go to preschool and learn it there. Our school still teaches it even thru 1st grade. Now my son is in second grade and if his shoe comes untied at recess the monitor will ask him what grade he is in, if he says 2nd they make him tie it himself, lol. He knows how, it just doesn't stay tied. I'm not sure if its good or bad but so many shoe styles are slip ons.
Kids are so different. Some can multiply and divide and read well beyond their years but have a hard time with physical things..... riding a bike, tying shoes.

They teach that in kindergarten at my kids school. We started at home long before that. I think all kids shoes should be made with velcro instead of laces. They can never keep them tied and the older they get they are just to lazy to tie. They don't care if they are tripping over the laces. My dad used to tie my shoes together in a knot when I'd slip them off without untying them.

They do not teach shoe tying in school because that is a job that should be done at home by parents/guardians. I have not doubt that teachers have much more important things to do than teach children to tie their shoes when their parents/guardians should take responsibility for their offspring and teach them to do it themselves.
Now, in the hip hop scene, it has become fashion to walk around with your shoes untied. Go figure!

It's seems as if many people expect everything to be taught at school. Why don't parents teach theri kids to tie shoelaces. Schools have better things to teach like Maths, Science etc.

Anyway, I think it's a nice fashion. KIds look cool and it sure is quick to put on your shoes. There are many more interesting things to do that tie shoelaces.

I'm more worried about their pants falling down around their ankles than them tripping over their shoes not being tied! Can't wait for that day! Yes, they must bring shoe lace tying back to the classrooms so that we all can feel alittle less unfashionable! Good observation and I'm with you all the way!

As a Chapter One teachers assistant I worked in a Kindergarten class and I did show many children how to tie their shoes. Some caught on quickly and some didn't. Childrens clocks go off differently as like catching on .

What kind of school did you go to?
Everyone I kow could tie their shoes sufficiently before starting at 5 yrs old. Still needed some practice but had the basics down.

Jeez, the youth of today!!

my mom told me how, she didnt show me though, and she only showed me once, and after an hour of being angry and frustrated that i couldnt tie my laces and everyone else can and all that unhappiness, my dad came home and the first thing he did is spent a half hour teaching me how to tie my laces.... :'')

I didn't realize shoelace tying was ever a school thing. I already knew how to tie them by the time I started school, and I'm no genuius.
