There is a small bird in England related to a finch that is known locally (in the Somerset area) as a "Twatwaffler", as it makes a very distinctive sound, roughly like this:

"ft-ft-ft-ft-ft-ft-ft-ft-plafffffff-pl-pl-pl-pl-pl-pl"

I believe this is where the origin of the legend that is Twatwaffle came from
