An abacus is a calculation tool, often constructed as a wooden frame with beads sliding on wires. It was in use centuries before the adoption of the written Hindu-Arabic numeral system and is still widely used by merchants and clerks in the People's Republic of China, Japan, Africa, and elsewhere.
The plural of abacus is abaci.
The origins of the abacus are disputed, as many different cultures have been known to have used similar tools. It is known to have existed in Babylonia and in China, with invention to have taken place between 1000 BCE and 500 BCE. The first abacus was almost certainly based on a flat stone covered with sand or dust. Lines were drawn in the sand and pebbles used to aid calculations. From this, a variety of abaci were developed; the most popular were based on the bi-quinary system, using a combination of two bases (base-2 and base-5) to represent decimal numbers.

Abacus refers to a sand covered table upon which figures were inscribed using a stylus. There is a suspicion that the abacus had a semitic origin. A cuneiform sign among the ruins at Nippur(Shid») resembles its form (a calculating table). The abacus developed into a form utilizing small discs or counters to indicate numbers. The counters were arranged loosely along lines or placed in grooves.

The Chinese invented it . It is a fore-runner of our present day calculator to ADD, Subtract, multiply and divide.
It was made of Colourful Bids on wire running across a wooden frame. Different coloured Bid on each row.
I think it had Ten or nine bids at the top and One bid at the bottom, most dictionary Will have picture or sketch of it. It may or may not have few more rows with some Bids on each row to store more then one answer, from previous calculations.
Most Chinese laundry in USA use to use it until recently, some may still use it or keep it as a nostalgic item.
It was sold as youth learning toy until recently.

I think they showed one in "Beautiful Minds," with Russell Crowe. If it's the movie I'm thinking of, the character "challenges" an Asian man to calculate problems, one with the abacus, the other with just his mind. Simple problems were done faster with the abacus. Rational numbers and further calculations were better done in Russell's character's head.

It's an ancient device that they used like calculators. It has little sticks in a square with beads on them, and people slide the beads to get calculations. I don't know how, though.
