working in social housing - really mad and challenging - dealing with pensioners one day, trying to co-ordinate a drugs bust the next. Can be really exciting - been doing it 13 yrs since I graduated. Every single day is different - colleagues are very very cool people and we have a brilliant laugh. Met my best friends (and boyfriends and husband!) in housing.
Pay in housing can be excellent - as good as the private sector especially once you get to managerial level.

I'm the business mgr. for a chemical engineering dept. My job's not too exciting, but saying I work in chemical engr always gets peoples' attention.
Generally, anything you have to be pretty intelligent to do, that you travel to exotic locales for, puts your life in danger, or that lets you meet famous people are considered "cool".
