I have received an e-mail from someone who is trying to scam me out of $5000 in the sale of my vehicle. Is there anyone I can report this to? He says he's from Canada (and I'm in Dallas, Texas).

Good luck trying to do so. I am in Texas, and had my identity stolen, and had an address and phone number of the person, but could find no one in my area, or the area where they were (in the Arlington area) interested in tracking them down. I spent hours and hours on the phone with different law enforcement agencies, even the state attorney general's office trying to find out where to get this reported and how to get someone interested. Cyber crimes are a mystery to the long in the tooth legislators, and there are no teeth in any laws on the books for dealing with this, particulary since there is a different country involved.

I simply documented everything in case it ever came back to bite me, but as far as getting law enforcement involved, it will be an uphill battle. I gave up the fight. Hope you have better luck.

Trying to scam and actually scamming are two different things. While it may be against the law to attempt to scam someone here, it may not be there. Since there was no scam, I am not sure what you could do.

If it linked to a site, inform Microsoft using Internet Explorer 7 with the "Anti-Phishing" tool.

Check with your local police department. Call the non-emergency number, please. I believe they can help with this problem.
