Coffin Corner
The corner of the field of play. A punter, if he is close enough, will often attempt to kick the ball out of bounds close to the receiving team's goal line and pin them back near their own end zone.

In the game of American football, a punter may try to place the ball so that it lands and goes out of bounds, or is downed, near a corner of the playing field just in front of the end zone, thus forcing difficult field position for the receiving team on their next scrimmage. By extension from the real-life usage of the term described above, the corner the punter is aiming for in that situation is sometimes called the "coffin corner", for if the kick is only slightly too far into the end zone a touchback is awarded the ball will be placed on the twenty yard line, losing the advantage that comes with a successful execution of the kick. However, if the ball goes out of bounds too far upfield, the receiving team will usually have more options on offense, such as being able to drop back for a pass without fear of possibly giving up a safety.
This type of kick can also be attempted in Canadian football. The difference is that if the ball becomes dead in the endzone in Canadian football, a single point is awarded to the kicking team and the conceding team scrimmages from their 35 yard line. In most cases however, the kicking team prefers the advantageous field position, not the point.

When a punter punts the ball,he tries to punt on the inside line near the end zone line in bounds to secure a no return on a punt which would put the opposing team on their 1 yard line with 99 yards to go for a touchdown.
Paul Maguire perfected this technique with the Buffalo Bills in his heyday. I have provided a link below.

when a punter kicks the ball into the corner of the field just short of the end zone. it may mean the other team gets the ball on the 3 yard line instead of the 20 . it puts them in a deep hole, thus, coffin, lol.....but thats it!!

I am not sutre where the name comes from but it refers to an area near the opponent's goal line where the ball goes out of bounds on a punt. The other team had to start from there on their drive.

It is the area within the ten yard line (and better, the five) where a punt lands.
You are so deep (buried) in your territory, you are almost in your coffin.
Chances of the opposition scoring is very high

its when you are close to the other touchdown and your not in fielg goal range but you have a chance to kick out close to the goal line...so you can kick it right before the goal line outoff bounds so there is no touchback or fair catch and just let it go into the touchdown:)
