I would love to see the views and opinions on India from people world over.

Is India the same to you as it is to me?

Or do you think any less or more of India?

(Please be honest)

Well, as you can see from the previous responses, the rest of us don't know much about India, do we?

To those of us who have never experienced it--even very much in books and films--it certainly cannot be the same to us as it is to you.

I suspect that you can tell what I know of India, and how much/little I know by looking over the list of things I have read and can call to mind immediately:

a few retellings of the Ramayana (which I don't understand very well); the Bhagavad Gita (which I barely understand); a number of folk tales, esp. Seasons of Splendour: Tales, Myths and Legends of India by Madhur Jaffrey, illustrated by Michael Foreman

Rabindranath Tagore, poetry in English, esp. Gitanjali: Song Offerings; works of Salman Rushdie, esp. Midnight's Children (more than once) and The Moor's Last Sigh (currently reading); Vikram Seth, A Suitable Boy; Arundhati Roy, The God of Small Things

books about India by British writers; for example, E. M. Forster, A Passage to India, and Paul Scott, The Raj Quartet; several books about Gandhi, esp. Freedom at Midnight by Dominique Lapierre and Larry Collins; a book about Mother Teresa, The City of Joy, by Dominique Lapierre

So what picture of India do I have in my mind?

Vast, diverse, crowded, pulsating with energy, fascinating, historic, progressive, hard-working, needy, wealthy, having suffered British dominance and internal strife, becoming industrial, becoming nuclear, becoming a world power; Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, Sikh, Zoroastrian, Bahá'í, Janist, Christian; AND rivers, mountains, caves, cows and water buffalo, the sky, the ocean, sculpture, meditations, saris and Nehru jackets, temples, pagodas, the Taj Mahal (of course), and beautiful landscapes (as captured in the photography of Shuva Brata Deb at the photolog listed below).

I fear I will never see India in person. So here's a question for you: what books could I read to learn what a US citizen needs to know about India, the place and its people?

Maybe I'll post this question on Yahoo! Answers one of these days.

properly theres 2 issues to declare with reference to the undertaking. First Khali is a huge huge call in India, hes as huge there as Hulk Hogan, Stone chilly, or The Rock have been in all different places. the belief became to make the great Khali as a perfect point heel, somebody who the followers might purchase as a dominant tension and WWE became attempting to capatilize on his stature and take a examine out to make a sturdy status in India. 2nd, on the time Vince reportedly did no longer choose Batista to be champion and he needed a heel character as champ, because of the fact he feels frequently there are extra followers involved in staring at a face character chase a heel character for the call than any opposite direction around. the belief became that Batista ought to chase Khali for some months until now beating him for the call to lots approval witht the followers. BQ: LOL! that made me snicker

well i'm an indian, and i DO think i live in one of the greatest countries around. I totally love our culture, traditions, beliefs..... and as for everyone out there who thinks we're poverty stricken i just wanna say - puh-lease, get your facts straightened out!! i'm not saying that we're damn rich or anything, but hey.. we're a developing country and are doing far better than the other countries around. Blame it to the stupid misconceptions people have about us! to them we're still connected to mango trees (*cough*),thieves( um........), poor( now really!), blah blah blah blah blah blah..... guys! just gimme a break....our country in agricultural field is far better than many (glad to know that studying geography ATLAST came handy!), and the engineers from our country form a major chunk of the leading industries in america n all.....and the list goes on! I know there are people out there who respect them for what we are and kudos for them as they know how to see the richness of our culture.. . but whatever! i know your question wasn't exactly meant for indians but i'm glad i straightened that out!!

p.s i'm being honest! :p
