moving their hands swiftly over running CDs? Is that intended to bring about a music pattern? I wonder how.......

What you're describing is what we do to sync up 2 different songs with the same bpm (beats per minute) or 2 copies of the same song for mixing/extending purposes. One trick, is to get the 2 tracks perfectly synced up and then slow one back a half beat or quarter-beat. This causes a 'swooshy echo effect' called PHASING that will make the weak-stomached drunk on the dancefloor lose his cookies!!!!!! lol! Hope the info was a little helpful... :-)

its from the olden days when DJ used to actually methodically and rhythmically stop and start the vinyl records (known back then as SCRATCHING)

I guess DJ's nowadays just do it to "look hip" or watever

They have to act cool, and dance around in a booth while they beat the crap outta records I think.
