A person doesn't "turn gay", love... You're born that way! If you're afraid to tell your parents, you may have good reason to keep silent about it for a bit until you figure yourself out. If you need to talk to someone about it before you go to your folks, you should visit www.youthresource.com and www.younggayamerica.com. Nobody can tell you whether or not you're gay or when the time is right for you to come out; it's an intensely personal experience. Be careful what advice from us that you take, okay? Good luck! Oh, if you want the parent's side of things...visit here: www.bidstrup.com/parents.htm

Wait until you're ready to tell your parents. And you really don't turn gay, but you do at some point come to realize you're gay.

I don't know how old you are, so it's hard to say when you should tell your parents. Also, it depends on what your parents are like, and what their views are.

Do they believe that it's wrong to be gay? Are they religious fundamentalists who believe that gay people go to hell?

Do you get along well with one or both of your parents? Initially, you might consider talking with one of your parents alone, before discussing it with both of them.

I'm assuming your parents are not some insane extremists who'd kick you out of the house, or make you go to one of those centers where they try to turn you into a heterosexual. Because that would really mess with your mind, and it's not what you need.

I'm pretty sure your parents will continue to love you regardless. But be prepared for how they might act. Even if they don't have an extreme reaction, t hey might scrutinize you more and put more restrictions on what you can and cannot do. I don't mean to say they'd do it out of meanness, because I'm sure they only want the very best for you. But if they have the wrong idea about what it is to be gay, your life might become a little more unpleasant.

Just remember, no matter what their initial reaction is, they'll eventually get over it. Most people do. Good luck.

Nobody just turns gay but when the time is right and you feel you are ready to tell them you will know what to say.

Yes, of course, because if there is anyone who is going to support you the most about your lifestyle it should be your parents. Sadly there are some parents that don't. If you and your parents have a good relationship tell them, they'll accept and love you more for being open about it.

Coming Out is an individual choice for each and every person that comes out and depends on why you want to come out, what that person means to you, and lots of other factors.

Decide why you're telling them... for you or for them?

If they are asking about your personal life... such as who you're dating or interested in, then that may be a reason to tell them.

But in the end, it's totally up to you. Some of us feel better not having any secrets in our lives, especially about who we love.

Check out some of the Coming Out resources listed below. And you may want to purchase "Now That You Know," a great resource for parents and friends of GLBT folks.

Coming out is hardly ever easy.

The best of luck to you!

When you are sure you are gay, sit them down together and tell them calmly. It probably won't be as bad as you think.
