Yes, it's called a charlie horse...it's a muscle spasm. Some of the most pain I've ever been in has been caused by muscle spasms in my calf or my foot.
I think the reason it often happens to me and probably a lot of other people when you're just waking up is that when you're in REM sleep (dreaming), your muscles are paralyzed so your body can regenerate a certain neurotransmitter to help you stay alert. Also, I'd imagine it is to help you not hurt yourself while you are dreaming. Anyway, when you first wake up, your body has to "turn on" that mechanism, and if you stretch right away, I wonder if the muscles are so relaxed that they can't handle that stress and spasm instead.
So, there are two things you can do. Not stretch in the morning until after you've walking around and awake, and/or find some herbs and natural rememedies (like homeopathics) that are designed to help eliminate muscle cramps. My mom takes them every night and hasn't had one in the past year. Goodluck!

Yeah doesn't that just hurt!!! It is leg cramps they travel up the back of the calf and man hurt like hell. You try to walk them off and it takes forever.
I heard an old wives tale once that actually works it sounds stupid so don't laugh too hard. But if you rub the calf with a spoon there is something in the metal that helps. Believe me I did try this and it works. I still feel the pull the next day like it was beat up but the pain goes away.
Well you are right there. But usually if you do get cramps they come in spurts when your muscles are tense day and night. So during that time. Yes I do keep one by my bed on my nightstand. Hey it may look funny but if it helps me which it does what do I care what I keep there. Really just try it, You will have to rub the scoop part of the spoon up and down for a while but you will feel it leave. I don't know why or how it works just that it does. I would love to know if you use it and how it works for you.
Good Luck!

Yep. It's a lack of potassium. Are you on high blood pressure medication? This is a common symptom of HBP meds, because they soak up potassium, especial HCTZ. Either way, if you are or aren't, you just have a low level of potassium. Potassium is like oil in a car's engine. Your muscles need to stay lubed up. Eat extra bananas, or if you're not too fond of their stool-loosening effects, then go to any CVS, Walgreens, or Grocery store, and get you some potassium supplements. Once you ingest them, you shouldn't have any more problems. Also drink lots of water. Water distributes potassium in the body, so if there's not enough water, then there won't be enough potassium...make sense?

I had these when I was growing in my teen years - especially when I was playing softball. stretching before and after exercise makes a big difference. However, too hot baths, not enough calcium were two triggers for me!
try immediately getting out of bed (I know this is a pain) - and walking slowly - it'll pass faster than sitting and waiting for it to recramp!

cramps. your leg is cramping... i get that a lot. They told me to eat bananas more often for potassium.
but i dont like bananas .. so i just try to take in the pain at night. When i get that, i just stretch my legs and hold my toes upright ... it gets more painful but it goes away after that...

Yep, I have. Had a crazy Aunt who called it "Banana Cramps" but it turns out she was on track. A lack of potassium can contribute to this.

yes, you're having muscle crumps, a lot of reason, your legs too tired from long standing or walking or whatever you did the whole day. all you have to do, when you have this attack next time, do your best to stretch your feet pointing towards you and not away from you, this is to break the crumps..
