That's how I found out about this pregnancy. I asked the doctor how far along I was and he told me that I had to be at least 10 days in order for it to show up in my bloodwork.

i found out 1 day after my period was due.. infact the results came back negative the first time with >5 BHCG, meanwhile, I had done a urine pregnancy test at the docs the same day and as it came back negative as i sat there, and i was just making another appt with the doc for follow up blood work and the nurse came out and said i had a delayed positive pregnancy test. Just took a little longer to pick up the hormone, but DEFINATELY pregnant. I'm almost 8 months pregnant now and am due in 6 weeks.

Many of the OBGYN's in the U.S. have an inhouse ultrasound machine. Should they have the new GE Ultrashound system they will be able to give you a color photo of your baby. Now as for the due date here is how that will work. During the ultrasound, they computer will take measurements of the fetus. It will then run those measurements through a software program that will determine +/- 10 days your due date. This is VERY accurate. Congrats on the new baby!

It takes 7-10 days for the egg to implant so right around 10 days a blood test should be able to pick up the HCG hormone.

by blood work we can usually tell a couple days before your missed period. there really isn't any reason to go in for a blood test though until you are late. any good doctor shouldn't do a blood test until you have a good reason for concern.

if you are worried about getting an abortion you will still have plenty of time. And if you are excited about getting pregnant use this time to build up suspense. No reason to rush in too early only to have to go back for a repeat test in a week or two.

Early on, they may do 2 blood tests... to see if the hormones in your body are increasing or decreasing (in case of miscarriage). But usually they can tell pretty quickly if you have the right hormones in your bloodstream.
