salary of 150 euros a month or in the UK where the average salary is about £1333 per month before tax [ approx £16k] I think.

I ask as I have just returned from Mauritius and it is a truly beautiful island, the people are very, very welcoming and have no bitterness about us in the West having more than themselves.

The country has its problems mostly the fact that the wages paid to are abyssmal and it has no form of social security, but on the weekends I saw even the poorest of families going to the beach which was always nearby and just spending quality time together. The pace of life was slower and there was racial unity within the country despite the fact that African, Chinese, Franco-Mauritians, Hindus, Muslims and Chrisitians lived and worked side by side.... I asked the people that I met whether there was conflict within the communities and really there just wasn't...
The people were not well off but they really seemed to be a lot happier than us in the West...

I aksed many Mauritians people if they wanted to live in England and the overwhelming response was No, even though they knew we earn more in this country and have a social security system. One woman said to me.. "No, I don't want to move to the UK or USA, I live in paradise"

I would not say that Mauritius had any rare diseases... they had an outbreak of Chikungunya fever transmitted by mosqutoes but that arrived there on the island from India. Otherwise there is nothing wierd and wonderful there...

Honestly, I would live in Mauritius for no money in my pocket each week, how wonderful life would be for me and my hubby to live in such a beautiful place with decent people who spend quality time together instead of worrying about materialism all the time, what their house is like and what type of car they drive, beautiful beaches to walk on, wonderful ocean to swim in, life couldn't be better for me, I would love it and go there tomorrow and be penniless for life if I was given the chance.

As a premedical student gearing toward infectious disease i will probably travel to places with epidemics of rare diseases...maybe then I will be further enlightened about other places. As of right now I love upstate NY and London England, I guess I just like the city....lot's of things to do....operas and stuff. I don't know if I would exchange that for a beautiful rural place althought I definitely would try it.

I've seen the same in rural parts of Malayasia. They appear to eat better too, more fruit. No junk.

It's an illusion most of us are better off in the west. We've got better electrical goods and cars. The rest isn't much better.
Especially the pressure and pace of life.
