According to the media, David Beckham may be awarded a Knighthood in the New Years honours list. Has this country gone completey mad? Am I the only one that cannot understand why we are honouring these people with titles and making them knights of the realm?
David Beckham has already been rewarded with an over inflated salary, and numerous highly paid endorsement deals, and all he has done is played a game that he loves. There will be those that say "but look what he's done for charity", but this is just nonsense. He has done what he should have done given his wealth and influence, and I'm sure that he hasn't gone without along the way, like many hard working volunteers and benefactors have.
It's wrong of me to just single Beckham out, as he hasn't been awarded anything yet, but what about others like Mick Jagger, who won't even live in our country because of the taxes, but will gladly don a top hat for a day at the palace.
Am I the only one who feels this way?

I agree with you. There are so many people given these honours for just being in the right place at the right time.
These honours a given supposedly for the celebrities donations to charity. If I had £50million and gave a million to charity I wouldn't notice the loss of the money. Many people, and they are often pensioners, give £10 to charity and it represents a good percentage of their weeks budget.
Julie Andrews, great artist though she is, lives in America and contributes nothing to this country yet she was made a Dame, which is equivilent of a Knighthood. Just imagine Victoria (poser) Beckham being Lady Beckham. Doesn't bare thinking about. Good job Jagger isn't married.
Also people that work in the Civil Service are given honours for just doing their job. This they get as well as there inflated salaries and an index linked pension.
Sorry all but this question just got me started. I am sure there are many more to come.

If Elton f@cking John can get one why not David Beckham. He suffered immensely after France 98 and showed huge courage and ability to win back the respect of the nation with his performances for England and Man Utd (who I don't support, Everton are my team). He single handedly won that game against Greece which got us to the 2002 world cup and has been an inspiration to the England team and other footy players worldwide.

So yes he qualifies for a knighthood, just look at the list of knights we have and you'll see they're all w@nkers who bribed the PM.

David Beckham has and still does bring joy to people worldwide with his abilities and charity work. He deserves one just for having to put up with Posh for one let alone for being one of the finest most gifted and committed professional footballers of this or any generation.

I personally wouldn't give him one but then again I wouldn't give one to Elton effing John or that self indulgent tosser Bob Geldof (Midge Ure was the man behind live aid, not that foul mouthed talentless, bandwagon jumping paddy) or Paul McCartney or Denis (I'm a criminal, son of Margret) Thatcher.

Look at the list of losers that have a Sir before their name and then I think you'll agree that out of most of them Mr Becks is a worthy recipient.

Here's my own personal gripe on this subject. How come Dame Helen McCarthy gets to be a Dame when all she did was sail around the world single handed? Don't get me wrong it was a fantastic PERSONAL achievement but what did it do for us? Nowt. And yet you've got Christopher Lee who, I believe, is in the Guiness Book of World Records for being in more films than any other actor ever (admittedly some as ropey as hell) for over 50 odd years giving pleasure to millions and he isn't even a Sir let alone a Lord (the male equivalent of a Dame).

Who decides this stuff??

.. and what an earth has he done to become a knight... he is an averagely good footballer.. there are much better players out there [hence him being dropped from the England squad].... his prime focus in life seems to be to line his own pockets and he opens a football school to help young kids which charges a fortune!! I didn't know you received knighthoods for being mercenary... let's start a petition to stop this nonsense!!!

I feel the same as you do.Granted he has done a lot for charity but there are thousands of people who have done as much and more quietly without the recognition they deserve. There are a lot of so called celebrities who get over get paid way too much doing the thing they chose to do,why should they be rewarded again?

Total agree, and this is the same David Beckham who couldn't decide to christen Romeo in to which religion.
