I've had a community tank together for a fews months now, and the first thing I always do when I see it is count heads. Does one ever stop doing this, or am I doomed to be an eternal fish counter?

Once a counter always a counter.

I'm a bit more morbid than just a counter.

The first thing I do is check the bottom for any remains, then I check the water's surface to see if anybody is floating sideways or upside down.

But I have always counted after that.
That's part of what having a tank is all about!

All good fishkeepers do this. You HAVE to do a head count every day. If a fish died overnight you have to remove it ASAP so it does not pollute the tank and kill everything else in there. Plus, it is always a good idea to watch everything for several minutes and take a good look at all the inhabitants so you can catch a problem early such as a disease outbreak, aggression resulting in injury, etc.

I think it's just normal.

I only have 7 fish in 2 differents tanks and whenever I walk into my room, I double check and make sure their all still alive and doing well.

Don't feel awkward, I do the same. I believe it is a normal habit; you don't want to see one of your "fishey's" dead.
