Is that 3^(x-5) = 17 or (3^x) - 5 = 17

3^(x-5) = 17
{taking logs on both sides)

log{3^(x-5)} = log{17}
-->
(x-5)log{3} = log{17}

x = log{17}/log{3} + 5
x = 7.5789

or (3^x) - 5 = 17

3^x = 22

log{3^x} = log{22}
-->
xlog{3} = log{22}
x = log{22]/log{3}
x = 2.8136

3^x -5 = 17
3^x = 22
log 3^x = log 22
xlog3 = log 22 [Use property that log x^n = nlog x]
x = (log3)/log 22
