You are more than free to take whatever you choose but this is why people study these things. Different meds are specifically for different symptoms. You do not want to take something not intended for that symptom. It most likely won't do anything for you but most importantly you could seriously hurt or kill yourself. You do not know how a drug will react with your body and your body won't react the same as someone else's. You could do some serious damage to yourself if you take the wrong thing. You may not realize the damage it could do. Simple aspirin or Tylenol can cause much damage if taken the wrong way. That's why there are so many diffrent types of drugs out there. There are so many different symptoms. Be very careful and follow the directions on the meds or consult a doctor/pharmacist. You can go to any drug store and ask the pharmacist any question and they will be more than happy to help you. If you choose to doctor yourself consult one of the websites such as WebMD.com. The guidelines are out there for a reason.

Pharmacists and MDs have years of training regarding the way that these things work. Pain is a complicated symptom because it can have many causes. For example, there are different types of nerve fiber which conduct pain; headache pain may be caused by dilation OR contraction of blood vessels (which are opposites.) Pain-relieving medications have certain physiological effects on the body that certain people (pharms/mds, etc) are TRAINED about. You are not. There are also toxic effects (especially on the liver) with certain drugs and then there are side effects on other parts of the body that must be considered. If you have questions for your doctor, you need to ask him or her WHY a certain medication is better than another. They should take the time to answer you, but you should ask and understand that they have training in this field.

Of course you can choose which drug to take but they all have certain ingredients in them that only work for certain things and if you choose the wrong one it won't work. Now if you are talking prescribed meds the docs have to figure in drug reactions, drugs that might form a habit and those that work best with what you have. If you insist on a certain one and the doc gives you it and it does something it shouldn't or won't work the doc doesn't want to get in trouble.

You're free to choose what you want to take, it just won't work as well. Pains that are inherently cause from inflammatory causes respond to an analgesic that elevates the inflammation to relieve pain. Another pain that's more receptory would respond to a pain medication that targets receptors. It's just a matter of taking the correct med for the correct pain.

I can't really tell you all the details, but it has to do with how the individual drug affects receptors in the brain and the reactions to various drug compounds. An analogy might be similar to trying to put 1 inch ball bearings through a sand filter.

In an ideal world, you would certainly have input, with your doctor, on what might work best for you.

But drugs affect different receptors. Pain is caused from different things.

Doctors, with absolutely no influence from the drug companies , should prescribe what would work best for you.

Unfortunately, I believe that most doctors prescribe for the drug companies that take them on the most trips and treat them to the best dinners.

But no, you should not be able to choose what is best for you solely based on you. You should be able to have input with your doctor to come up with the best decision.

Doctors study what are the best meds for a patient.

Alot of ppl who abuse drugs..if left to pick/choose what they would want to take for pain...may take something that they could overdose on and thats why pain meds are controlled.

No. Cause you're not a Medical docotr. And you're not knowledgeable of the consistency of chemicals that are involved in each of these drugs. Heck, if every on e had their way with it, we would be swamped with million's of drug addicts. That would be a night marre.

I think if you were free to choose which medicine was right in your opinion, you would be on the fast track to addiction.
