They appear in the upper left corner where a graphic picture might go, as in an advertisment. I seem to notice them most when I am in yahoo.

Huh? More details please. Are you talking about graphic images that can't be loaded in your web browser? They appear in the upper left corner of a graphic frame.

It means that for some reason, the system cannot access the photo/graphic that it wants to display. The little red X is what the system substitutes for the missing graphic element. Sorry you are seeing so many of them!
